Chapter 2

  1. The second chapter of “The Swerve” explores the life of Poggio Bracciolini, a papal scribe and ardent book hunter in the fifteenth century. Poggio visits monastic libraries in quest of lost manuscripts because of his insatiable curiosity and passion for antiquated literature. This chapter describes Poggio’s journey, emphasizing his interactions with different texts and the difficulties of the period. It prepares us for the critical turning point when Poggio comes upon Lucretius’s “On the Nature of Things,” a book that will have a significant impact on the development of intellectual history.
  2. Poggio Bracciolini is presented by Greenblatt as a key character in the tale of the poem’s rediscovery by Lucretius. Poggio, a papal secretary and Renaissance humanist, is described as an enthusiastic book hunter with a deep interest in classical literature. The chapter highlights the difficulties and benefits of Poggio’s search for knowledge by examining his travels, meetings, and attempts to discover old manuscripts. The story builds to the momentous discovery that will change the Renaissance’s intellectual landscape as Poggio’s journey progresses.
  1. The connection I made with this text is from a game series I played growing up called uncharted. The main character Nathan Drake was from the ancient times and he was on a journey with a bunch of a quest to find a treasure. He had trails and tribulations along the way like Poggio.

Q. What will Poggio face along his journey?
